TIA Hosts Capitol Hill Policy Forum on Securing the IoT Network

TIA was proud to host “Securing the IoT Network – A Policy Forum” on Thursday, June 8 as a  part of a new series of Capitol Hill educational events the association is spearheading. Held over breakfast in the Rayburn House Office Building, the event showcased TIA members depth of policy expertise in the areas of cybersecurity and IoT to more than 70 attendees including key House legislative and committee staff, government employees, the media, and tech and telecom industry professionals.

House Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (R-OH) provided opening remarks where he discussed the subcommittees specific work in the area of automated vehcile technologies and draft legislation that is close to being shared that will reflect the subcommittee’s focus on a “soft touch” legislative approach on emerging technologies. The subcommittee also wants to ensure its “helping people and not hindering” on cybersecurity issues involving emerging technologies, though it recognizes the rising threat caused by distributed denial-of-service attacks and ransomware as seen in the WannaCry attacks.

Following Chairman Latta, TIA hosted a panel discussion with industy and government experts who dived into the security risks facing the Internet of Things (IoT). Moderated by Clete Johnson, Partner with Wilkinson Barker Knauer, the panel included insights from Eric Wenger of Cisco, James Simister of Panasonic, Denise Zheng of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Kirsten Todt of Liberty Group Ventures, LLC.

The event was streamed via Facebook Live on June 8, and is available here on-demand.
