TIA Joins with oneM2M in Announcing Major Step Towards IoT Interoperability

Arlington, Va. (July 27, 2016) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks and a founding member of oneM2M, said that today’s announcement of new Machine to Machine (M2M) communications specifications is a significant step towards realizing the enormous potential of the Internet of Things (IoT).

The new set of official specifications, known formally as Release 2, will be released by oneM2M later this year. Release 2 introduces 14 additional specifications for seamless IoT interconnectivity across multiple sectors, including automotive, healthcare, smart homes and smart cities, and builds upon the stability and reliability of the oneM2M standards previously introduced in Release 1. Notably, it will also feature substantial security enhancements, highlighting oneM2M’s commitment to security and privacy.

“The work we’re doing as part of oneM2M is focused on building an essential foundation for the growth and widespread adoption of connected technologies,” said TIA CEO Scott Belcher. “The Release 2 specifications are particularly important because they focus on reliability and security. Both are absolutely essential to the future success of IoT technologies, which will be used in everything from massive smart city projects to life-changing individual health applications.”

Belcher continued, “TIA is committed to helping drive international efforts to develop effective and widely accepted IoT standards and specifications. As a founding member of oneM2M we’ve seen first-hand the remarkable work that is being done by the group’s more than 200 members.  We congratulate all of those involve and look forward to the continuation of oneM2M’s critical work.”

A universally accepted set of standards and specifications will be essential for ensuring that smart devices can work together seamlessly. oneM2M is playing a lead role in this effort through a multi-national coalition of leading IoT experts.
