TIA Issues New Mechanically-Generated Balanced-Twisted-Pair Cable Impulse Noise Detection and Characterization Standard

Arlington, VA (December 11, 2014) – The Telecommunications Industry Association, which develops standards for the information and communications technology industry, has released a new document, TSB-5008 Internally-Generated Cable Impulse Noise Characterization, Detection and Mitigation.

Application developers have noted that certain cabling systems exhibit internally-generated impulse noise when flexed. TSB-5008 describes the impulse events associated with flexing cables and will include example test results showing the pulse amplitudes, bandwidth, variability and time decay of the observed behavior. It also describes testing methodologies characterize the impulse noise of a cabling system. These are provided together with guidance to end users to avoid potential transient bit errors due to this effect.

TSB-5008 was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Systems, TR-42.7 Telecommunications Copper Cabling Systems (568) subcommittee.

For more information about TR-42 and how to participate in standards development with TIA, contact Germaine Palangdao at standards@tiaonline.org.

TIA actively seeks participation in these projects from the user and general interest communities.

TSB-5008 and all TIA standards may be purchased at http://global.ihs.com.
