STEP - the Sustainable Technology Environments Program™ - is a rating system and guide managed by the STEP Foundation, a nonprofit organization comprised of technology trade associations representatives, their members and STEP supporters. At its core, STEP is intended to bring sustainability to the process of planning, designing, integrating and operating technology systems, as well as reduce long-term environmental impact from technology deployment.

STEP Makes Upward Progress
As a member of STEP's Board of Directors, TIA is working to developing sustainable technology standards to improve ICT energy efficiencies. TIA is also STEP's voice in Washington, advocating for federal government adoption of the STEP rating scale as well as legislation and policy that will enable ICT innovators that make up TIA's membership to achieve STEP's goals for the technology systems that operate within sustainable buildings. Conducted by the providers of technology and the building owner, STEP engages the best practices and standards for sustainability. Its rating scale is adaptable to any technology project within a built environment.
At its core, STEP is intended to bring sustainability to the process of planning, designing, integrating and operating technology systems, as well as reduce long-term environmental impact from technology deployment. Learn more about STEP.

TIA Environmental Standards Development
Creating viable sustainable technology is part of every conversation among TIA’s volunteer engineering committees that are addressing ways to improve energy efficiency in data centers, networks and devices through standards development:
- Standards work for more energy-efficient data centers continues in the Committee for Telecommunications Cabling Systems (TR-42).
- The Committee for Mobile and Personal Communications Systems Standards (TR-45) is collaborating in work to lower power transmitted from cells when experiencing little or low traffic such as in shopping centers at night, and tourist attractions.

TIA's Ecyclingcentral.com
Electronics waste is growing exponentially. Televisions are used on average for less than two years. For computers, it's three. Recycling, or "E-cycling," these and other electronic items is critical for preserving landfill space and for ensuring that hazardous materials used to make electronics are properly disposed. Ecyclingcentral.com enables businesses and consumers to find reuse, recycling, and donation programs across the country, state by state. It includes an FAQ on recyclers and links to additional resources for recycling batters or mercury-containing lamps.
This free resource is one way that TIA is paying it forward environmentally on behalf of its member companies.
Green ICT at TIA 2012: Inside the Network
Today's networks are designed for optimal capacity, not efficient energy use. What is needed is a major breakthrough, a radical re-design of networks, and that can only be achieved through the contributions of all essential participants, from basic and applied researchers and component suppliers to network operators, equipment and system suppliers and governments. At TIA 2012: Inside the Network – our signature annual conference and exhibition, TIA and GreenTouch are teaming up to showcase next generation products and services. Together we have developed a series of educational sessions devoted to innovative thinking in the area of energy efficient network equipment.

Energy and the Environment Policy Program
TIA's Energy and Environment Policy Program runs a sustained advocacy campaign with key government officials asserting the role of the ICT industry in achieving national green goals through improving energy efficiency and decreasing carbon emissions. From climate and energy legislation to smart grid funding and implementation, TIA advocates policies that maximize the green impact of the ICT industry without hampering innovation. The Energy & Environment Working Group (EEWG) provides opportunities for TIA member companies to highlight to policymakers in the Congress and the Administration how ICT equipment significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions in other more energy intensive sectors as well as what actions companies are taking to decrease the environmental footprint of the ICT sector. Contact us to participate in the TIA EEWG (TIA members only).
Market Review & Forecast
The videoconferencing equipment market has been booming in recent years. The difficult economic environment has put pressure on companies to cut costs, and conferencing provides tangible cost savings by reducing the need for business trips and days away from the office. In addition to the savings from reduced business travel, the reduced energy consumption is of growing interest to companies. Videoconferencing will continue to be the fastest-growing enterprise equipment category, with a projected 10.4 percent compound annual increase from $1.3 billion in 2011 to $1.93 billion in 2015.

Last week was a busy one at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The signs are very encouraging that the member countries of the WTO are back on track to move the WTO’s trade liberalization agenda forward – from the new International Services Agreement (ISA) to the ongoing negotiations to expand the existing WTO Information Technology Agreement (ITA).
