TIA Issues Call for Interest on new Project for Telecommunications – Telephone Terminal Equipment – Handset Magnetic Measurement Procedures and Performance Requirements

Stakeholders Invited to Contact TIA Regarding Participation.

Arlington VA. (May 08, 2013) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) TR-41.3 Engineering Committee on Analog and Digital Wireline Terminals has issued a call for interest for a new project to revise TIA-1083-A to become TIA-1083-B  initially titled "Telecommunications – Telephone Terminal Equipment – Handset Magnetic Measurement Procedures and Performance Requirements"

TR-41.3 is revising its standard that defines measurement procedures and performance requirements for the handset generated audio band magnetic signal requirements and limitations on the magnetic noise levels of wireline telephones. The Standard can be used to evaluate handset telephones with both analog and digital network interfaces. Examples include, but are not limited to: corded and cordless telephones, ISDN telephones, digital proprietary telephones, VoIP telephones, softphones running on personal computers, IEEE 802.11 telephones, USB telephony devices, DECT telephones, and Bluetooth® telephony devices. The new revision TIA-1083-B of the standard will add requirements for wideband audio performance as well as requirements to allow the use of real speech signals instead of sine waves for frequency response measurements.

 “Hearing aid and cochlear implant users can obtain a much clearer signal when using their hearing device in its T-Coil mode. The original TIA-1083 standard, and the improvements made during revisions to this standard, are focused on establishing performance requirements for a telephone’s T-coil signal output so user’s will enjoy significantly improved speech intelligibility” said James Bress, Chair of TR-41.3 and President, AST Technology Labs.

“We look forward to the opportunity to again enhance this Standard that was originally developed in response to complaints of digital cordless telephones creating a loud “buzz” when used with hearing aids in the T-coil mode,” noted Steve Whitesell, Chair of TR-41 and President, Whitesell Consulting LLC.

The stakeholders may include, but are not limited to:  Telephone suppliers and distributors, the VA, people with hearing loss who use the T-coil mode of their hearing aid or cochlear implant when talking on the telephone, hearing aid and cochlear implant manufacturers, audiologists and hearing aid dispensers, telephone manufacturers, hearing loss advocacy groups, state telephone equipment distribution programs for people with hearing loss.

TIA is actively seeking participation in these projects from the user and general interest communities.
