Strategic Initiatives

TR-8 and APCO Project 25 Public Safety Standards - Recognizing the need for common standards for first responders and homeland security/emergency response professionals, representatives from the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials International (APCO), the National Association of State Telecommunications Directors (NASTD), selected federal agencies and the National Communications System (NCS) established Project 25 (PDF), a steering committee for selecting voluntary common system standards for digital public safety radio communications. TIA TR-8 facilitates such work through its role as an ANSI-accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) and has developed in TR-8 the 102 series of technical documents.  These standards directly address the guidelines of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA).

TR-50 and GSC Machine-to-Machine Standardization Task Force (MSTF) - The GSC Machine-to-Machine Standardization Task Force (MSTF) was created during the GSC-15 in 2010 to serve as an information exchange between standards developing organizations and the M2M industry. The MSTF is directly supported by the work of TIA's TR-50 engineering committee, which is developing a reference architecture for machine-to-machine communications.

TR-50 and oneM2M - The purpose and goal of oneM2M is to develop technical specifications which address the need for a common M2M Service Layer that can be readily embedded within various hardware and software, and relied upon to connect the myriad of devices in the field with M2M application servers worldwide.

TR-42 and Sustainable Technology Environments Program (STEP) - A technology certification and rating system managed by the STEP Foundation, a non-profit organization comprised of technology trade associations representatives, their members, and STEP supporters.  At the TR-42 Closing Plenary in June 2012 a motion to form a new subcommittee, TR-42.10 STEP was approved without objection. The role of TR-42.10 is to standardize the STEP rating system from the STEP Foundation and to evaluate the current published standards under TR-42 and identify opportunities to maximize cabling infrastructure in relation to the STEP rating Standard. The first meeting will be held October 1, 2012 (meeting notice).

TR-45 and Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) - The standardization group for CDMA2000 technology. 3GPP2 was formed out of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) International Mobile Telecommunications "IMT-2000" initiative, covering high speed, broadband, and Internet Protocol (IP)-based mobile systems featuring network-to-network interconnection, feature/service transparency, global roaming and seamless services independent of location.  3GPP2 is directly supported by the work of TIA's TR-45 engineering committee, which develops wireless standards for CDMA devices. (CDMA2000 / UWC-136)

TR-41 and Administrative Council for Terminal Attachments (ACTA) - An organization established to adopt technical criteria for terminal equipment developed by ANSI-accredited standards development organizations and maintains a registration database of equipment approved as compliant with the technical criteria. ACTA is directly supported by the work of TIA's TR-41 engineering committee, which creates standards for terminal attachments.

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) -  As the global focal point for governments and the private sector, ITU's role in helping the world communicate spans three core sectors: radio communication (ITU-R), standardization (ITU-T), and development (ITU-D). Fomulating groups within ITU-T have previously adapted TIA standards.

TR-42 and Cloud Computing Subcommittee (CCSC) - Acting as a liasion between TIA's twelve engineering committees, the CCSC hosts monthly calls open to TIA member companies and engineering committee participants.  The focus of these calls is to address ways TIA engineering committees may develop or amend TIA standards pertaining to cloud services.  The CCSC also maintains liasion relationships with national and international standards development organizations (SDOs) to determine how existing TIA standards may be adopted to avoid duplication of efforts.
