Bios from TIA Talks Smart Buildings as a Microcosm of Smart City in Barcelona

Wesley J. Johnston
Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Johnston joined TIA as its CEO in June 2017. He brings more than 25 years of experience delivering global solutions in information and communications technologies (ICT), as well as a keen sense of how business, government and associations should work together to drive industry innovation. Prior to joining TIA, Mr. Johnston was the Managing Director of Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT investments for the Gores Group, a leading global private equity M&A firm). As an active technology company board member, he was responsible for portfolio company oversight as well as leading operational due diligence efforts for the firm's TMT investments. Prior to joining The Gores Group, Mr. Johnston held senior executive positions with global, multi-national firms as well as start-up technology companies. He was EVP and Chief Operating Officer with Dimension Data, where he led sales, marketing, solutions development and service delivery across the Americas for the $6 billion technology integrator.

Mr. Johnston earned a BA from Princeton University, an Executive MBA from George Mason University and completed a two-week European study program at Oxford University. A lifelong technologist, he is also a cyber security co-patent holder: No. 20150244771“System and method for interconnecting and enforcing policy between multiple disparate providers of application functionality and data centers and/or end-use.”

Harry Smeenk
Vice President, Program Development

Harry Smeenk has over 30 years of industry experience in wireline, wireless and IP network design, development, deployment and integration. He has led product development, business development, engineering, installation, and field service organizations across the country working in start-up and medium size wireless construction and deployment companies, as well as larger corporations such as Nortel Networks, Goodman Networks and others. He has provided IoT and next generation networking and wireless consulting expertise to numerous companies, started and sold 3 wireless construction and maintenance companies, and has held various executive-level leadership positions across the information and communications technology industry.

Harry earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of North Carolina (UNC) - Chapel Hill, NC

He earned his Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business Management from St. John Fisher College, Rochester, NY.

Limor Schafman
Director, Smart Buildings Programs

Limor has international expertise as an attorney, market strategist, entrepreneur, innovator, blogger, speaker and moderator. Currently, she’s working with communications and connectivity members of the TIA, as well as real estate and building systems companies, developing the Smart Buildings Program. As an integral part and microcosm of Smart Communities, developing market understanding, frameworks, specifications and standards for intelligent real property that serves the needs of both the communications and real property ecosystems can be an avenue to accelerate Smart Community development.

Limor began her career as an attorney in Paris, France at the firm Gide Loyrette Nouel, and the bank Société Générale. Limor brings a particular understanding of developing immersive and interactive environments, having worked in the theme park and video game industries, before founding KeystoneTech Group, her marketing strategy and business development consultancy. She is also former President of the World Future Society DC, and Co-founder and Chair Emeritus of the IPv6 Forum Israel Chapter.

Limor received her Juris Doctorate from Boston University School of Law; Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania; and Executive Program Business Degree from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. She is a non-practicing member of the California, Massachusetts and New York state bars.

Michael Zeto
General Manager
Executive Director of AT&T Smart Cities

Michael Zeto is General Manager and Executive Director of AT&T Smart Cities. Michael is responsible for the teams that drive the overall strategy, product development, business development and go-to-market strategy for AT&T’s global smart cities business.

Michael previously served as a Director of Strategy in AT&T’s Mobile & Business Solutions organization, focusing on M&A and emerging growth opportunities in the areas of IoT, Big Data, Consumer Engagement and Cloud technologies.

Prior to joining AT&T, Michael was the co-founder and CEO of Proximus Mobility, a location-based consumer engagement software company. Throughout his career, he has successfully served in various general management, corporate development and enterprise sales roles with various technology companies.

Michael is an Industry Fellow with the Georgia Research Alliance, an organization that makes investments in University professor-led research projects that generate IP that can be commercialized. He is also an active participant in the Atlanta-based technology startup community, serving as a mentor and advisor to early-stage entrepreneurs. To this end, Michael regularly speaks at events throughout the country to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and intrapreneurship. Michael is also a Corporate Advisor for Forte Ventures LP.

Currently, Michael Chairs the IOT.ATL Executive Leadership Committee for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He also is very active in supporting local and national charities, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Boys and Girls Club of America, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.
