TIA Member Companies Demonstrate How Smart Technology is Clean Technology at FCC Event

Washington, D.C. – FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski hosted a Clean Technology Showcase at FCC headquarters on May 18, bringing in leading technology companies to highlight the role the ICT industry plays in reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption in other more energy-intensive sectors. The event also demonstrated how the ICT sector itself is becoming more sustainable.

Companies demonstrated a range of the latest technologies including smart grid consumer interface applications, home energy management systems, eco-friendly smart phones, smart grid networking equipment and other technologies focused on improving energy efficiency.

Chairman Genachowski visited with company representatives while reviewing exhibits. In remarks, Chairman Genachowski commented on the importance of the sector in meeting national energy and environment goals as the FCC outlined in the National Broadband Plan.

Secretary Chu commented, "The ability to save energy, save money, and make money are all part of broadband."

Addressing the potential of smart grid, FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff lauded the role that broadband can play in empowering consumers to "use data for their economic benefit."
