FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 17, 2009
Arlington, D.C. - The Telecommunications Industry Association's newly launched Smart Device Communications (SDC) Engineering Committee (TR-50) held its inaugural meeting today, launching its efforts to develop standards to enable, monitor and ensure interoperable interfaces to the network.
TR-50 is intent on speedily producing a ubiquitous protocol for communicating with smart devices used in industries such as manufacturing, medical, building automation/home automation, transportation, entertainment, semiconductor, communication, and energy distribution.
The meeting was convened by former TIA President Matt Flanigan representing Numerex Corporation.
The meeting agenda included:
Elections for committee chair and vice-chair will be held at TR-50's next meeting, tentatively scheduled for Feb. 4, 2010 at TIA headquarters in Arlington, Va. At that meeting, the committee scope will also be defined.
Participants in today's meeting included: Alcatel-Lucent; ANDA Networks; CEA; Cisco Systems, Inc.; Ericsson, Inc.; FAL Associates; Farance, Inc; Home & Utility Systems; ILS Technology; Intel; Lantiq; LGE; Microsoft Corp.; Motorola, Inc.; NAVTEQ; Numerex Corp.; Panasonic Corp. of North America; Qualcomm, Inc.; SAE International; Samsung Electronics; Sigma Delta Communications, Inc.; Starent Networks Corp.; Texas Instruments; TKstds Management; Tyco Electronics; Ulticom; VoCAL; VTech Communications; WK3C Wireless LLC.
"It's evident from the number of participants and the diversity of the companies and interests that they represent that there is a great need for smart device communications standards to allow for interoperable technologies," said Cheryl Blum, TIA Vice President for Standards and Technology. "TIA is uniquely positioned to leverage the experience of the telecommunications industry in bridging the needs of other industries, including utilities, healthcare, public safety and smart transportation."
In developing a new protocol specification, TIA will work to incorporate the best of many specifications that have been created over the last 15 years while avoiding mistakes of the past, creating a flexible, adaptable technology protocol that will survive well into the future.
