TIA Issues New Standards for UMB TDD Air Interface Specification

Physical Layer and Medium Access Control Defined in Recent Additions to Standard Suite

Arlington, Va. – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leader in advocacy, standards development, business development and intelligence for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, recently released TIA-1121.011 Physical Layer for Ultra Mobile Broadband™ (UMB™) TDD Air Interface Specification and TIA-1121.012 Medium Access Control for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) TDD Air Interface Specification.

TIA-1121.011 includes basic physical layer protocol of the UMB Time Division Duplex (TDD) air interface standard, including requirements for:

  • Access Terminal Operation
  • Access Network Operation
  • Broadcast and Multicast Services Operation

TIA-1121.012 defines the medium access control (MAC) layer protocols. This standard defines the normative behavior of the MAC layer by describing the precise processing rules for each of the MAC layer entities that are affected by the duplexing mode. This volume consists of the following sections:

  • TDD Forward Link Control Segment MAC Protocol
  • TDD Forward Traffic Channel MAC Protocol
  • TDD Reverse Control Channel MAC Protocol
  • TDD Reverse Traffic Channel MAC Protocol

Other parts of the TIA-1121 standard include:

  • Overview for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification
  • Radio Link Layer for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification
  • Application Layer for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification
  • Security Functions for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification
  • Connection Control Plane for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification
  • Session Control Plane for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification
  • Route Control Plane for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification
  • Broadcast-Multicast Upper Layers for Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) Air Interface Specification

Other standards may be required to implement this system and are listed in the references section of each part.

These standards provide a specification for land mobile wireless systems based upon cellular principles and are part of the IMT-2000 CDMA Multi-Carrier, IMT-2000 CDMA MC, also known as cdma2000®.

Both TIA-1121.011 and TIA-1121.012 were formulated under the cognizance of TIA Engineering Committee TR-45 Mobile & Personal Communications Systems, TR-45.5 Subcommittee on Spread Spectrum Digital Technology.
