TIA Addresses Trade Compliance Concerns in Annual Report to USTR

TIA’s 1377 Report Analyzes Trade Agreements That Cover U.S. Exports of Telecommunications Equipment

Washington, D.C. – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leader in advocacy, standards development, business development and intelligence for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, officially filed today its 2009 1377 Report to the United States Trade Representative. The 1377 is an annual series that details the effectiveness, implementation and compliance of U.S. telecommunications trade agreements. Countries and regions covered in this year’s TIA submission include China, India, Republic of Korea, the European Union, Brazil and Mexico.

“Promoting a truly global communications market, TIA encourages full, fair, and open competition,” said TIA President Grant Seiffert. “As the world advances in liberalizing trade, it is imperative that the U.S. government continues to monitor and enforce trade agreement commitments, ensuring U.S. ICT manufacturers’ competitiveness around the world.”

Trade agreement infringements highlighted in this year’s 1377 filing include: protectionist policies associated with indigenous innovation initiatives; foreign equipment certification processes; standards development; spectrum management issues; complex tax structures; and Information Technology Agreement adherence.

TIA’s 2008 1377 submission is available on the USTR filings page at tiaonline.org.
