TIA Publishes Vietnam Communications Market Report

Growing Market, Upcoming Bilateral Dialog, Open Doors for U.S. Communications Investment.

Arlington, Va. - The value of Vietnam's rapidly growing telecom equipment and services market is expected to reach $5.3 billion by the end of 2007, making it the second-fastest growing telecom market in the world, according to a new Global Insights report issued today by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). The increasingly open Asian country, which relies heavily on imports in its Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) sector, represents a unique market for manufacturers and service providers interested in expanding their global market share. Vietnam's recent accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO) will accelerate sector growth by reducing entry barriers and increasing competition.

Vietnam's government is also actively promoting its ICT sector, having recently developed a strategic plan for sector development that calls for 25-35 percent broadband deployment by 2020. Questions remain, however, including limits on foreign majority ownership, state control of carriers, burdensome customs clearance requirements and corruption and lack of clear jurisdiction throughout the regulatory regime.

This Global Insights report is timely because it precedes a historical bilateral dialogue between the United States and Vietnam scheduled for this September, in which TIA will play an instrumental role representing the interests of the U.S. ICT industry.

The full report will be available to TIA members to aid potential investment in the Vietnam market, which poses a great number of potential risks and rewards.
