Arlington, Va. -- The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) applauded House Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert and Science Committee members for today’s introduction of three pieces of legislation that seek to advance America’s competitiveness.
TIA believes the three bills will help develop a new generation of students and young professionals who will ensure that the United States will continue competing with the world’s best and brightest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The three bills also provide a funding foundation to nurture and train future U.S. innovators.
"I applaud the Science Committee for its valiant efforts to bolster science, technology, engineering and math education and basic research at a time when our nation's leadership on both fronts is being challenged by formidable international competitors," TIA President Matthew J. Flanigan stated. "TIA and our member companies are concerned about America's global competitiveness in science and technology, and we greatly appreciate the work of Chairman Boehlert and the entire House Science Committee to advance science and technology- related basic research and education. The entire committee's leadership on these issues is immensely appreciated, and we look forward to working with them to see these bills enacted into law."
One issue not addressed in the bills is that of the provision of federal funding for long-term, pre- competitive, basic research carried out by industry. Increasing such funding is a priority of TIA's Communications Research Division (CRD), since many TIA members operate their own laboratories and are intent on doing more basic research to advance scientific discovery in the communications sector. "TIA intends to work with the Science Committee to advance our industry's and the nation's basic research agenda," Flanigan noted.
