TIA Voices Support for Telehealth Services in Comments to CMS

ARLINGTON, VA (September 9, 2013) – On Friday, September 6, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, submitted comments to the Department of Health andHuman Services’ Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS) in response to proposed revisions to payment policies under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule and Other Revisions calendar year 2014.

In its comments, TIA communicated support for the widespread availability and utilization of telehealth services, and its belief that remote connectivity has become an essential part of 21st century medical care. Specifically, TIA supported the CMS proposal to expand eligibility for “originating sites” of telehealth services; the proposed addition of “Transitional Care Management Services” as eligible for payment as telehealth services; and the expansion of coverage to non-face-to-face complex care management services for Medicare beneficiaries who have two or more significant chronic conditions. These changes proposed by CMS are consistent with the widely-supported concept that enhanced availability of and access by health professionals to patient-generated health data before, during and after treatment greatly enhances the speed and accuracy of diagnoses by medical professionals based on accurate data, and results in significant savings to the system generally.
