TIA Urges Congress to Pass Bipartisan Trade Promotion Authority This Year

Arlington, Va. (Nov. 13, 2014) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today urged bipartisan passage of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) during this legislative year. TIA joined the Trade Benefits America coalition in sending a letter to Senate and House leadership.

The passage of updated TPA legislation is critically important to ensuring comprehensive, high-standard outcomes in the ongoing talks to conclude the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, the Trade in Services Agreement, and the Environmental Goods Agreement. In addition, Congressional passage of TPA will help expedite the successful conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement.

Trade agreements expand market access and increase the competitiveness of U.S. businesses and create jobs in the United States. For the telecommunications sector, countries with which the United States has trade agreements accounted for almost 39 percent of total U.S. telecommunications equipment exports in 2013, despite only accounting for 13 percent of the global economy.
