TIA Urges House Energy & Commerce Committee to Maximize Available Spectrum, Encourage Broad Participation at FCC Voluntary Incentive Auctions
ARLINGTON, VA (December 11, 2012) - The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today sent a letter (attached) to House Energy & Commerce Committee leaders in advance of Wednesday’s hearing with all five FCC commissioners.
In the letter, TIA urged the Committee to focus on ensuring that the FCC’s voluntary incentive auctions are designed to maximize the amount of licensed spectrum available, that the auctions feature simple rules to encourage participation by broadcasters, and to allow the broadest participation by potential bidders in the forward auctions. TIA also supported action by the Committee towards the clearing of federal spectrum, supporting FCC efforts to simplify and streamline regulations, and to push for rapid deployment of the nationwide interoperable public safety broadband network created by the 2012 spectrum law.

We hope that China will use this break in the negotiations to reexamine its approach to the negotiations to expand the ITA and focus on reducing its overly large list of sensitive products. If China is ready to move forward to conclude the expansion of the ITA this year then the ITA Expansion is achievable this year.

Last week was a busy one at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The signs are very encouraging that the member countries of the WTO are back on track to move the WTO’s trade liberalization agenda forward – from the new International Services Agreement (ISA) to the ongoing negotiations to expand the existing WTO Information Technology Agreement (ITA).
