TIA Urges Congress to Immediately Restore FCC Website to Reinstate Approval Process for New Devices
Govt. Shutdown is Halting the Marketing & Sale of New Communications Products

ARLINGTON, VA (October 16, 2013) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks , today sent a letter strongly urging Senate and House leadership to take immediate action to allow the FCC to restore the relevant portion of its website that would enable high-tech manufacturers to continue marketing and selling new products.

The FCC’s approval process for new devices has been suspended due to the FCC’s shutdown of its website, single-handedly preventing any new products from coming to market despite a functioning non-governmental approval process utilizing third-party testing laboratories. TIA urges the Congress to strongly urge the FCC to alleviate this complete stoppage of new ICT products from entering the US marketplace simply by restoring the relevant portion of the FCC’s website.

“At the time of shutdown the FCC announced that third party testing laboratories will be unable to submit their device approval notifications to the FCC – simply because the agency has shut down its website,” TIA President Grant Seiffert wrote in the letter to House and Senate leadership. “As a result, from the day the government shutdown began until the shutdown ends, no new communications devices – from cellular phones and tablets to public safety radios – can be legally marketed or sold in the United States, despite having been fully certified to FCC standards.”

Seiffert continued, “This bottleneck can be addressed simply by restoring the relevant portion of the FCC’s website, and we request that you urge the agency to do so immediately.”
