TIA Submits Comments to FCC on Hearing Aid Compatibility Volume Control Requirements

ARLINGTON, VA (September 9, 2013) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today submitted reply comments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding TIA’s previously-filed Petition for Rulemaking urging the Commission to expeditiously take an important step towards improving the access and experience of hard-of-hearing users of terminal equipment, such as wireline telephones by undertaking a rulemaking to update references in Part 68 of the FCC’s rules to TIA standards that set hearing aid compatibility (commonly referred to as “HAC”) volume control requirements.

TIA standards for HAC volume control are relied upon by millions of American hard-of-hearing consumers to ensure that wireline telephone systems allow them to maximize their experience when communicating by voice. In TIA’s reply comments submitted today, the record shows support from two key stakeholder groups – a robust coalition representing the consumers impacted by TIA’s request, and the hearing aid industry. Furthermore, the record notably contains no opposition to TIA’s request of the FCC. TIA believes that this reflects that the information communications and technology (ICT) manufacturer, vendor, and supplier community is wholly supportive of such a change, and urges the FCC to move forward with its request.
