TIA Statement on FCC’s Plan to Terminate Proceeding to Expand Mobile Wireless Services In-Flight
Arlington, Va. (April 10, 2017) – The Telecommunications Industry Association expressed disappointment with today’s announcement that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to terminate its 2013 Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that sought to expand consumer access to mobile wireless services onboard aircraft.
Ashley Simmons, TIA’s Director of Government and Public Affairs, commented:
“We believe the FCC should reconsider its decision to keep this regulation, which serves as a barrier to consumer choice and innovation. There is no technical or safety reason why in-flight mobile data and voice applications should not be allowed to operate on board aircraft.
“The industry’s longstanding position is to avoid the prioritization of one technology over another. Airlines are already allowed to provide Wi-Fi, and TIA believes the FCC should encourage competition and innovation by allowing them to provide access through additional network technologies.
“TIA continues to advocate that policies surrounding in-fight mobile connectivity should be addressed by the airlines themselves - which are in the best position to make decisions regarding issues of comfort and traveling experience. TIA hopes to continue to work closely with all the stakeholders involved to streamline regulations and improve opportunities for in-flight connectivity services for all U.S. travelers.”
