TIA Speaks to PCAST Regarding the Importance of Federal Funding for the ICT Research Ecosystem
ARLINGTON, VA (Sep. 7, 2012) - The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today provided comments to the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology (PCAST) regarding the important role the NITRD program must play in providing and coordinating basic research funding for the U.S. information and communications technology research ecosystem.
TIA said, “While the U.S. still boasts the strongest research ecosystem in the world, we are beginning to see signs of erosion as competing nations take strong steps to attract ICT research to build innovation-based economies.” Commenting on difficult funding decisions facing policymakers, TIA stressed “the necessity of continued funding for ICT research as a national priority.” TIA also commented that the need for greater coordination between federal research efforts will increase as ICT is further integrated in different sectors of the economy.

Last week was a busy one at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The signs are very encouraging that the member countries of the WTO are back on track to move the WTO’s trade liberalization agenda forward – from the new International Services Agreement (ISA) to the ongoing negotiations to expand the existing WTO Information Technology Agreement (ITA).
