TIA Seeks Modernization, Higher Standard of Trade Rules in Updated NAFTA
Arlington, VA (May 18, 2017) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, expressed support for the Administration’s move to formally launch the process leading to renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Cinnamon Rogers, TIA Senior Vice President for Government Affairs, commented:
“TIA members view this as a timely opportunity to update NAFTA by incorporating new rules of digital trade and related policies that will make internet-based services and other digital products more affordable and accessible. At the same time, it is essential to maintain existing elements of the agreement that have contributed to U.S. leadership in the information and communications technology (ICT) space. Trade policies that aid the ICT industry – which is experiencing double-digit employment growth and pays more than double the median wage – benefit American workers and boost the U.S. economy.
“We hope the Administration can establish a foundation for the robust long-term growth of U.S. ICT exports, setting a higher standard of trade rules that can serve as a model going forward. The negotiating objectives outlined in the Trade Priorities and Accountability Act (TPA) reflect issues of critical importance to our members. We would highlight its value as a guide in advancing modern trade rules to protect U.S. companies and workers and ensure they reap the benefits of their innovation.
“As the discussions proceed, we look forward to working with the Administration and Congress, as well as the governments of Canada and Mexico to provide more detailed input on these issues.”
