TIA Says FCC Should Refrain from Regulatory Action in Inquiry into Major 911 Outage
Arlington, VA (June 17, 2014) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in response to the inquiry into the major 911 outage in Washington State on April 9-10, 2014.
Press reports and preliminary data indicated that over 4,500 911 calls to public safety answering points (“PSAPs” or 911 call centers) did not get through in Washington state alone during a six-hour period before midnight on April 9, 2014. To help make sure the FCC receives all pertinent information to make a thorough analysis, the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau opened a public docket and will allow interested parties to provide information around the causes, effects, and implications of the outage.
In its comments, TIA said:
“TIA supports the Commission’s efforts to ensure that these networks are reliable and resilient, but the FCC should refrain from taking regulatory action, and encourage and allow network operators and vendors to continue their voluntary efforts in improving the reliability of their networks.”
