TIA Files Comments with USTR on 2013 National Trade Estimate
ARLINGTON, VA (October 15, 2012) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today filed comments with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) regarding foreign trade barriers faced by the information and communication technology sector operating in global markets. Prepared for the 2013 U.S. National Trade Estimate, TIA’s comments detail obstacles for U.S. exports of high-tech goods and services in Argentina, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador the European Union and India. The comments highlight the broad variety of trade barriers faced by the ICT sector abroad including: protectionist measures favoring the domestic ICT industry, import license restrictions, complex and discriminatory tax systems, and other in country requirements that disadvantage imports of ICT equipment. TIA continues to work with the U.S. and governments around the globe for a competitive and innovative market environment.

Last week was a busy one at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The signs are very encouraging that the member countries of the WTO are back on track to move the WTO’s trade liberalization agenda forward – from the new International Services Agreement (ISA) to the ongoing negotiations to expand the existing WTO Information Technology Agreement (ITA).
