TIA Applauds FCC Actions on 5 GHz and AWS-3 Bands

Arlington, VA (March 31, 2014) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today applauded the FCC on its actions regarding 5 GHz and the AWS-3 bands.

“This is a watershed moment for American consumers who are tethered to their smartphones and tablets,” said Grant Seiffert, president of TIA.  “In the AWS decision, the FCC is setting out the rules under which 65 MHz of spectrum, some of which is being vacated by the federal government, will be made available to service providers to address consumer demand for mobile broadband use.  And, in the 5 GHz decision, the FCC is optimizing critical swaths of unlicensed spectrum to enable next generation Wi-Fi.”

Seiffert continued, “This is the first significant action on spectrum availability since the 2010 National Broadband Plan set out the goal of making available 500 MHz of new spectrum to satisfy America’s thirst for mobile broadband use.  Chairman Wheeler and his fellow commissioners, as well as Congress, are to be congratulated for bringing these decisions to fruition.  And it’s not just consumers who win. For technology companies of all sizes and types, today is a great day."
