Telecommunications Industry Association Announces Agreement with Illuminating Engineering Society
ARLINGTON, VA (August 9, 2012) - The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, announced today that it has joined with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) in signing an Honorary and Friendship Agreement to exchange information and promote harmonious standards development in intelligent building systems, energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives, among others.
"TIA is very excited to establish this friendship agreement with the Illuminating Engineering Society,” said TIA President Grant Seiffert. “While the march towards convergence has been long, there is no question that convergence is here, today, and is extending well beyond the traditional phone and data services into others, like illumination. The Information Communications Technology (ICT) industry is embracing these opportunities to support the connection and control of devices to realize optimized, energy-efficient operation."
In today’s converging world, communications are becoming an integral part of technological innovation. Both TIA and IES hope to continue to aid the continuing efforts to improve the energy-efficiency of lighting systems, control systems and the communications network that connects them as these become even more important.
“The illumination industry has realized that the key to maximizing energy-efficiency lies in the use of technologies that are integrated and work intelligently to control the function and operating time of building lighting systems,” said William Hanley, Executive Vice President of IES. “The key to these technologies is the ability to collect useful information and communicate that information to the lighting control system. Working with TIA to develop, enhance and promote these technologies will result in reduced energy consumption and lower costs while maintaining a productive, safe environment.”
“The participation of IES in our standards development program for Intelligent Building Cabling and Sustainable Technology Environments Program (STEP) will set the stage for additional improvements and opportunities in these markets,” explained TIA President Grant Seiffert.

TIA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Read ANSI's report, "Standards Boost Business" at standardsboostbusiness.org.
About IES
The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) is the recognized technical authority on illumination. For over 100 years; its objective has been to communicate information on all aspects of good lighting practice to its members, to the lighting community, and to consumers, through a variety of programs, publications, and services.
IES is a forum for the exchange of ideas and information, and a vehicle for its members' professional development and recognition. Through technical committees, with hundreds of qualified individuals from the lighting and user communities, IES correlates research, investigations, and discussions to guide lighting professionals and lay persons via research and consensus-based lighting recommendations. The IES is accredited as a Standards Development Organization by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

We hope that China will use this break in the negotiations to reexamine its approach to the negotiations to expand the ITA and focus on reducing its overly large list of sensitive products. If China is ready to move forward to conclude the expansion of the ITA this year then the ITA Expansion is achievable this year.

As part of a large U.S. industry delegation representing a broad array of ICT manufacturers, TIA is in Geneva, Switzerland this week to cheer on the trade negotiators who are working hard to conclude the negotiations to expand the product coverage of the WTO’s Information Technology Agreement (ITA). The ITA remains one of the most commercially important WTO trade agreements – by eliminating tariffs on a broad range of ICT products, the ITA lowers the cost and improves access to these products, which are vital to the economic competitiveness of all economies around the world.
The Telecommunications Industry Association was in Geneva last week along with AdvaMed, the Consumer Electronics Association, the Entertainment Software Association, the Information Technology Industry Council, the Liquid Crystal Polymer Coalition, the Motion Picture Association of America, and the Semiconductor Industry Association. This coalition of high-tech companies represents a broad spectrum of manufacturers and service providers in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector.
Last week was a busy one at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The signs are very encouraging that the member countries of the WTO are back on track to move the WTO’s trade liberalization agenda forward – from the new International Services Agreement (ISA) to the ongoing negotiations to expand the existing WTO Information Technology Agreement (ITA).
