TIA Applauds Senate Passage of Trade Promotion Authority Legislation
Arlington, Va. (May 22, 2015) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today commended lawmakers in the Senate for passing much needed bipartisan legislation to modernize and renew the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA).
This important piece of legislation provides U.S. negotiators the tools to pursue and complete new market-opening trade agreements, while enhancing the role of Congress through the development of negotiating priorities and oversight of the process.
TIA CEO Scott Belcher issued the following statement:
“It’s essential that our trade agreements catch up with our quickly-changing tech and telecom industries. As American companies increasingly deliver products and data overseas, trade rules must ensure they don’t face unfair restrictions. The Senate’s action will help advance America’s leadership in an increasingly global marketplace, particularly in the highly competitive information and communications technology industry. The TPA insists on modernized rules for trade, setting a strong foundation an ambitious American trade agenda that includes the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. In doing so, it ensures that our companies will continue create high paying jobs here at home, drive economic opportunity and be world leaders in innovation. We are pleased the Senate has taken this critical step forward and we urge the House to follow quickly.”
