TIA Acquires EIATRACK, Environmental Resources from EIA

Environmental compliance service a natural fit for TIA member companies.

Arlington, Va. - The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) today announced its acquisition of several key environmental compliance resources of the Electronics Industries Association (EIA). These include EIATRACK and its website and EIA's web-based E-cycling Central. TIA, in collaboration with ECA and JEDEC, will also maintain the Joint Industry Guide (JIG) for Material Composition Declaration of Electronic Products, another EIA asset. The acquisition creates opportunity for both TIA members and non-member companies that are already EIATRACK subscribers, as the site is enhanced by new management with greater breadth of knowledge and resources to implement new programs.

"EIATRACK is a proven, valuable environmental compliance asset," said TIA President Grant Seiffert, "and we're proud to welcome this world-class service into the TIA family." He added, "TIA supported EIA's environmental programs from their onset in the early 90s. These services, which will be open to TIA members and non-members alike, will be enhanced by TIA in the coming months with new programs and greater funding."

EIATRACK is a subscription-based web service that delivers information on product-oriented environmental compliance for the electronics sector. The EIATRACK team consists of experts from the legal, environmental policy and science sectors. EIATRACK tracks compliance issues through subject updates and reports across a variety of global jurisdictions. All EIATRACK content providers remain under contract; these include the law firms Beveridge and Diamond (USA), Hunton and Williams (Europe), Holland and Knight (China), and subject-matter experts EcoFrontier (Korea), Tokio Marine (Japan) and WSP Environmental (Australia).

The JIG was developed as collaboration between EIA, JEDEC and the Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization Initiative, all of whom recognized the challenges facing global electronics industries from diverse material composition requests, often known as green procurement surveys. The JIG contains lists and threshold levels of materials and substances for disclosure, the regulatory requirements that establish those threshold levels and data fields for information exchange. Updates to the JIG will be produced as needed.

EIA's E-cycling Central is a web-based database of reuse, recycling, and donation programs across the country for electronic products. The program was founded on the principle that many electronic product parts can be refurbished and reused, and vendors can derive great economic and social value from participating in programs designed to assist consumers in recycling used electronics products.
